As a homeowner or business owner we are well aware of the stress that a plumbing emergency can bring. Plumbing emergencies tend to happen at the most inconvenient times and happen suddenly. There is nothing worse than being in a panic and having very little to no knowledge in plumbing basics. At Trojan Plumbing we believe in educating Cape Town home and business owners, on a few tips that that one should think about and action the moment the emergency happens. This can help minimize the risks and severe damage to your home or business
These are the first things you should do the moment you have a plumbing emergency:
Turn off the main stop tap
Plumbing problems can happen at any moment and it is vitally important for the family or the employees of your business to know where the isolation valve is for all the water on the property.
It is also very important that this valve has been serviced and checked annually, and that it is easily accessible and that it can be turned off with ease.
When a leak is expected it is very important to shut it off at the source – be it at a little stop tap near the fixture (sink or toilet etc) or at the main stop tap outside your property. Once all the water has been isolated, open up some of the taps close by to eliminate any water left over in the water lines.
By allowing the leak to flow, will only make the water damage bigger and more expensive to take care of. As we are professional plumber and experienced in these matters, if you do not have an idea where the main isolation valve is, we would highly recommend that you are aware of where it is located and that you are you know how to turn it off. With equipping yourself and your employees with this valuable information, when an emergency does occur you know what to do.
Turn off the geyser at the Distribution board
If you suspect and sure that the water is leaking from the geyser, turn it off both at the main stop tap and at the electrical power board (Same would apply with gas). This is important as If the geyser is left on electrically with no water in it or with no water flow this could cause severe damage to your geyser, especially when the heat inside it accumulates, then it is highly probable that it would overheat and burst when left alone.
Assess the damage
You should also ensure that you have assessed what damage may have occurred and take photos of the damage. Clean up any excess water and obvious hazards that could occur, that can cause further damage
