Before buying a new water filter, there are a few important points that you need to be aware. We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions that most home owners have about reverse osmosis water filter systems.

1. How effective is reverse osmosis technology?

It is currently one of the most effective water filtration methods available. This technology is used to produce bottled water.

2. How do I go about choosing which model to purchase?

One of the most important things to consider, should be your household water pressure. Each model is designed with low, very low or regular water pressure levels in mind. Those with low water pressure levels (below 40 psi) will require a pump to be included in their system.

3. Am I able to install my own reverse osmosis water filter system?

If you are familiar with Reverse Osmosis then it could be possible, however at Trojan plumbing we do this daily and have learnt from experience and technical know-how to install functional calibrated systems.

4. If we move, can we take the system with us?

Yes, Reverse Osmosis systems are easy to uninstall, however it does offer a selling opportunity to your home.

5. How long can a Reverse Osmosis Filter System last for?

If your filter system is well serviced and parts are replaced regularly or when needed, then they can last a very long time. The typical life span of the membrane is 2-5 years (depends on the initial water quality). The filters should be replaced every 6-12 months.

6. Will it affect the mineral content of my water?

A reverse osmosis system cannot discern the difference between good minerals and bad impurities, so it can affect the mineral content of your water. It will remove around 90-99% of impurities though. An alkaline or calcite filter can be used to add the minerals back at the end of the process.

7. Will it affect the PH of my drinking water?

By removing some minerals then yes it can make the water slightly more acidic. An alkaline filter can be included with most RO systems that can improve the pH of the filtered water and return it to more natural, alkaline pH levels.

8. Does the filter need electricity?

No, they use water pressure.

9. Will a water softener affect the RO filter?

A water softener can extend the life of the membrane because softening the water can help protect the RO unit.

10. Why do I need a separate faucet?

The reverse osmosis system is for your drinking and cooking water and does not provide enough water for washing dishes or regular water usage. Also, it is not made for hot water, so you would use your regular sink faucet for those things, and the R.O. faucet for your clean, great tasting water.
